So this is what a doctor told the other registry nurse in our department the other day:

"Oh, god help you if you're good and you have a work ethic, at this place. You're doomed! Now, if you don't work, or you're incompetent, you'll be fine at this place! They'll take great care of you. But if you're good, and you work? They'll just shit on you and load you up with work, until you can't take it anymore and you fuck up, or you quit."

Now, this is coming from a doctor. If that's how a doctor feels -- with all the rank they can pull -- just imagine how the nurses are treated, and how they feel.

Consultants are nosing around my boss and my boss' boss and our department. And of course they want no input from rank and file nurses; they won't even talk to us. (But, by all means, administration: keep sending those pointless "Town Hall Meeting" emails, like you think we're actually going to attend them, as if we believe that they are anything than official mouthpieces of administration propaganda; we're not stupid enough to believe they're actually intended for two way communication or that anyone will actually listen to us, especially not if we've been through this shit at other hospitals before.)

But if the consultans would talk to us, I would tell them:
1) boss' boss, with his ultra-important master's degree, hasn't got a clue how to use a spreadsheet, and
2) every bit of QA he's gathered for you people was actually gathered by US, the rank and file (and, quite often, put into spreadsheets by us because he doesn't know how to do it, including the FIVE ACCUMULATED MONTHS OF HARD COPY PRE-OP CHECKLIST SHEETS that he made Outpatient Surgery and Inpatient Holding and GI recovery nurses fill out on... YET MORE HARD COPY QA TOTAL SHEETS!, and
3) boss' boss re-allocates registry nurses (such as myself) untrained in certain specialties (such as PACU) into those units, supposedly with a preceptor (which would count such nurses automatically as 0.5 FTE), but he lists them as 1 FTE to round out his seriously empty staffing grid in order to meet the supposedly voluntary but nevertheless recommended nurse/patient staffing ratio guidelines -- i.e., his staffing grid LIES and,
4) when the shit hits the fan in PACU, boss' boss has never, not even once, stepped out of his office to actually take patients; if we're lucky, he might hook a couple newly arrived OR patients to the monitors and get a first set of vital signs, and
5) to the best that we can all determine, boss' boss sits in his office doing nothing all day but forwarding emails to us that he is too stupid to realize (by looking at the addresses in the header) were already sent to us on the same email lists that he's on, dear god, what an idiot this man is, and
6) behind his back, his nickname among us rank and file nurses is "Little Man" or "The Little Man," and,
7) when I sent him an email asking him to clarify the length of time and/or permanence of my "re-allocation" to a unit I never applied for and was never trained for before, the chickenshit bitch made my boss reply to the email to him!, and
8) after offering me a staff position twice before and then yanking it away both times, boss' boss offered me a position again, and when it didn't come through for three months, I figured it had disappeared into the ether -- which was fine, because by that time my personal situation had changed, my bf had started doing PCP after being clean for 20 years, I had to move, and I couldn't take the $9/hour pay cut of the staff position because suddenly I had to get my own apartment, scrape together two months worth of rent for a security deposit, and my monthly expenses more than doubled because I was now going to be paying for everything by myself and splitting costs with no one -- and then this clown tells me the position has come through... And when I tell him I can't accept it due to the $9/hour pay cut and my drastically changed financial situation, he gets all pissy and in less than a month starts shitting on me, "re-allocating" me, and in general acting doing punitive things to me for turning down the staff position he'd offered me twice before and then yanked away!

But, I know these consultants (hacks) aren't going to listen to us and we won't be allowed to talk to them anyway.

Our best hope is that the consultants do what consultants are supposed to do: eliminate waste and unnecessary spending, and fire middle managers... like my boss' boss.

More tomorrow or later this week, when I hopefully have more time/less stress.
