verushka70: Modified publicity still puts Fraser and RayK closer together in a slashy moment. (DS slash)

Tina Carter posted this Scientific American article, about "lexical elaboration" and the number of Inuktitut words for snow, to the Fraser/Kowalski Facebook group with a link. Turns out, while there may not be 100, or 40, words for snow in Inuktitut - there are still a lot!

The original post may be to a private group so I've linked to each item separately.

Anyway, "lexical elaboration" is fascinating... And also totally makes sense. Plus, the Inuit aren't the only ones to have multiple words for snow in their language... We (in American English) have a few, too, which I've certainly heard not just from weather forecasters on local Chicago news, but also among just regular people (and I use many of them myself): snow, sleet/"freezing rain", flurries, snowflake, snowsquall, blizzard, etc.

Like, if it's snowing but only slowly, lightly, and almost lazily (whether big fluffy flakes, or wispy, tiny flakes), the word we (and TV meteorologists) use is "flurries."

Example:

Person 1 [looking out window at work]: Hey, it's snowing out!

Person 2: Oh no! Rush hour traffic will be horrible!

Person 1: Nah, it's just flurries - they don't stick; it'll be okay.

People shared birthday greetings for Paul Gross and Daniel Kash over the past several days, over on the Due South! Facebook group... I'm only a day late for PG's birthday 🙂

Someone also wondered what PG's been up to because they thought they saw him in Toronto:

Thanks to a post by Susan Momot on the Due South! Facebook group, happy to report that due South is now available on Disney+ in Canada.

Based on multiple comments to the post... it is NOT available on Disney+ in the US. Don't know about other countries either.

Sorry this is late... Joannie Currie posted this (link to original post) on the Due South! Facebook group Feb 23, when the Toronto Maple Leafs played the Chicago Blackhawks, with the following text:

"That magical juncture where due SOUTH meets reality Today, the Leafs play the Hawks, in the city they call Chicago The first hockey game at Maple Leaf Gardens was Nov 12, 1931 between the Leafs and the Hawks (2-1, Hawks) The last game at MLG was Feb 13, 1999, Leafs vs Hawks (6-2, Hawks) The Leafs have not been sucking this season and this is the year they will win the Stanley (Raymond Kowalski) Cup Leafs rule!! Sorry, I"m sure the Hawks are a perfectly lovely team too đź’– (photo has Maple Leaf Gardesn in the background, Toronto)

as a reminder of that hilarious scene where Ray and a Leafs fan have the following exchange:

Kowalski: "Leafs suck."

Ticket seller: "Leafs rule."

Kowalski: "Hawks rule."

Ticket seller: "Hawks suck."

Kowalski: "You suck."

Fraser: "You are bilingual, Ray."

Saw this otpin-arts fanart on Tumblr (original link) - just delightful! - with the following text referring to Fraser's brown uniform: "Ray gets distracted by the brown uniform.

So far I only saw it once in S3. And me and some folks over on discord really appreciate the brown uniform so this popped into my mind."

I reblogged it there, but wanted to share it here too!

Today (Feb. 11) is Leslie Nielsen's birthday. Among his many dramatic and comedic film and TV roles, he played Sgt. Frobisher in multiple due South episodes. Sadly, he passed away in 2010.

So someone on the FB dS group posted an IG reel about the Woodbine Centre mall and Fantasy Fair, where various scenes for various episodes of due South were filmed (off the top of my head, COTW1's Ferris wheel scenes, and the mall scenes in Seeing Is Believing).
Here's the IG reel:

There was a statement on FB to "see it before it is torn down" but I don't see any news to indicate that is an imminent possibility.

Here's another overview of Woodbine Centre (from Nov. 2024): https://seanmarshall.ca/2024/11/09/woodbine-centre-the-end-of-a-fantasy/

ETA: here's some info on Ontario shopping malls, including Eaton Centre (also used for filming dS)... it's a few years old (2018):

Reccing this "Barrett's Privateers" epistolary Yuletide fic:

"God Damned Them All"? Documenting the Loss of the Privateer Antelope (1674 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Barrett's Privateers (Song)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Elcid Barrett, Narrator (Barrett's Privateers)
Summary:

A grim narrative of fraud, deception, false advertising, murders, robberies, puttings in fear and operating without a Board of Trade Certificate.

I saw the song "Barrett's Privateers" listed as a fandom during Yuletide signups - but you never know until the Yuletide collection opens, if a particular fandom was matched on...

So when I went through the Yuletide collection after it opened, and found this fic, I thought I should share it with dS fen!

So, with difficulty, here we see Fraser pull himself back from the edge. Look at his visible hard swallow. Look at his hand beginning to shake as it holds the gun in Gerard’s face.

Fraser is mad as hell. (Excellent physicality of the emotion by PG, too, btw!)

Sure, some people will argue, “Well, he was severely provoked, and he pulled himself back from doing something stupid and violent.”

True. But. If he were 100% well-adjusted - like he acts for most of the rest of the series, like butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth - would he ever have drawn his gun in the first place?

I love angry, hurting, messed up Fraser. I just love him to bits and I long ago lost any ability to remove that headcanon from my mind, unless I’m writing a pinch hit for a very specific prompt or Secret Santa author letter with parameters very unlike my own, in which case I compartmentalize, and put myself in the shoes and headspace of the recipient, and see Fraser their way.

But in my own imaginings and headcanon - Fraser is pretty emotionally messed up. He’s doing the best that he can, of course. And, all things considered, his best is pretty good. (I’m not suggesting his grandparents were completely terrible surrogate parents, by any means. But. His late grandmother slaps her late adult son - which Fraser doesn’t even see; only Fraser Sr. sees/experiences that; that is canon.)

And while it is completely understandable that Fraser would be pretty messed up emotionally/relationship-wise, of course it would definitely have repercussions in his adult life and relationships.

I’m just saying.

And I love messed up Fraser. Love him. He is my favorite version of Fraser because it makes him so human, and not a Mountie superhero at all.

~ ~ ~

Finally, I reblogged Syrup Map's excellent Tumblr post - with GIFs of Fraser being mean to Gerard! go look! - from Bird in the Hand, and added:

And then there’s this.

To paraphrase Hannibal, “Doing bad things to bad people feels right.”

So Fraser lets a little of his anger out of its cage.

More GIFs to illustrate my fascination and headcanon!

more GIFs under the cut )
This is why the perfect, polite, well-mannered Thank-you-kindly canon Fraser of dS feels… a bit “off,” to me. There is anger in Fraser. He has the clear potential to do bad things to bad people (who, let’s face it, completely deserve it, plus more).

I love this Fraser. This is my head-canon Fraser. He has suffered loss after loss (shall we talk about his ACE score? it would be kind of high, don’t you think?), starting very young. He appears fine on the surface, but let’s not forget that (absurd) psychological test with the Rorschach images in S3 episode Strange Bedfellows. He is not okay. He’s not fine. His psychological state is eventually deemed “acceptable” in that ep - but, c'mon: “acceptable” is not exactly well-adjusted or healthy. “Acceptable” is like getting a C on a paper when you should have gotten an A or at least a B.

And ftr, of course he is not okay! That’s completely understandable given his history: an adult man who lost his mother at age 6, was subsequently abandoned by his grief-stricken father (a child does not understand why a parent leaves/is gone - only that they left), whose entire life is uprooted to move to live with his grandparents (and let’s just point out that his grandmother’s ghost slaps Fraser, Sr - who is himself a ghost - in Letting Go! if you presume that, like most grandparents, she mellowed with age, and that is the mellower version of her - what was she like with child!Fraser??)… the constant moving/losing friends/having to make new friends/being the new kid because they were mobile librarians…

That is all canon. But there is never any canonical mention of therapy or counseling, which a kid with such a background (or his adult self) would surely need to process the many traumatic changes he experienced at such a young age, and develop some healthy coping mechanisms (because the ones you sort of fall into as a child - I certainly wouldn’t call it “choosing” when as a kid, all you’re trying to do is find a way to cope that WORKS - aren’t usually the healthiest in a set of circumstances this bad.

Then, in his early adulthood and RCMP career… the Victoria thing happens. Of course Fraser is not okay. (And that is okay.) How on earth could he be?

So I posted on Tumblr about Frannie for ds30below week 2 - characters:

I love Francesca. I love how Ramona Milano plays her. All the many changing facial expressions. The way she wears her heart on her sleeve. You would never not know where you stand with Frannie.

Last week did not go well for me, so I'm catching up on the ds30below fanwork recs theme of last week. Hope that's okay...

There are a couple of what we used to call "bad!Ben" fics I return to again and again. Because although he is a dark AU Fraser in these fics, I feel there are slight glimmers of these dark AU Frasers in canon. why the hell should you read a dark AU Fraser? - because the angst, if you're into that - among other things - is FANTASTIC )

But if you cannot imagine a bad AU version of Fraser, or the mere thought of such a version of him is abhorrent, please do not read any further. You have been warned.

You Say (That's Not An Answer)
by seperis Relationships: Fraser/Victoria, Fraser/Victoria/Kowalski, Fraser/Kowalski.
This is the Fraser who got on the train with Victoria... and what happens to Kowalski, tasked with catching him. Major ensemble characters are here, obliquely in some cases - all also darker AU versions of themselves. This is a perfect storm of AU canon.

No Archive warnings apply, nobody dies... but don't read it unless you're willing to be convinced. If you are willing, though, your dark heart of hearts will be richly rewarded: it's angsty, disturbing - and disturbingly hot.

Since You've Gone (I've Been Lost Without A Trace) by helens78 is actually a Fraser POV remix of another excellent darkfic (spuffyduds' Used To Think I Knew You, which is from Kowalski's POV, and which I also highly recommend). Archive Warnings Apply to both the original fic and the remix - please heed the tags and warnings!

If the Archive warnings don't scare you off these fics, I think you'll find that helens78's fic is deeply insightful about the Fraser in spuffy's original fic (which, being Kowalski's POV, it can't be). helens78's portrayal of Fraser's depersonalizationl/dissociation is especially well done.

My heart breaks for the damaged Fraser damaging others and himself in these fics. I guess you could call it empathy for the devil.
