For those not acquainted with him, Tom Skilling is the fucking bomb of meteorologists. He could meteorologically kick the asses of any of those WeatherChannel clowns. I have seen this man speak live at lectures. He actually makes weather phenomena and meteorology sexy and intriguing -- no small feat, given the kind of weather we often deal with here in Chicago, and the fact that he is, well, a portly, bald, man with glasses.

*ponders*

(Hmmm. Other than the portly, I have been known to find the other two quite attractive...) Anyway, I can't explain it. He has a sexy mind because he's just so damn excited about weather and meteorology and when you get him going you can tell he loves it and knows so much about it and wants to share it. A few minutes on the 9 o'clock news has never been enough for him. Hence the lecures.

Example: A couple/few weeks ago, he told everyone on the evening news that our satellite image was a composite of an east coast and a west coast satellite because the one over the midwest had had new software uploaded and then suddenly stopped responding, so "they" (interestingly, he didn't elaborate on "they"...) were trying to get an older, de-commissioned satellite to respond... but in the meantime, they had to composite midwest images from the two coastal satellites. Didn't see that on the Weather Channel!!

However, even Tom can't improve the latest news. We just got more snow today. Here's a list of the most recent weather blog subject lines from his weather blog:

• Cold air could add inches to Tuesday's fluffy snow
• Measurable snow and zero degree temperatures running twice the average
• Snowfall and water content
• Planet Watch
• Snow to sneak back in after blustery, bitter cold
• From Bitter Cold to Snow
• Chicago's Snowfall This Winter
• Planet Watch
• Frigid temperatures, dangerous windchills Sunday
• Sunny but Frigid Sunday

You get the idea, eh?

Clearly, I am not a candidate for Canadian citizenship. Except maybe in BC on the Pacific coast. Because, brrrrrr. I am so fucking tired of this cold and snow and cold and snow and cold and snow. I seriously want to drive to Mexico, but my passport expired. Or at least Arizona or New Mexico or California! This is just endless.

snow advisory AGAIN ?!?

Sending sympathetic hugs your way about the snow and cold! I *hate* snow and cold (except in beautiful photographs or movies, not in NYC where the snow gets to be dirty slush within minutes and the cold is just plain cold!)! And besides which, if it snows and then remains cold, we gets the ice, with the slipping and the sliding and the possibility of *falling* and *breaking one's hip* and then dying.... If I remind you of Rodney McKay (Stargate Atlantis) with the worst-case scenarios, you've got a good understanding of me!

So - sympathetic hugs coming your way!
Love, max

I love snow, probably because I never see it. If I could, I would take it off your hands and spread it all over my yard. I'll send warm, sweaty, summery thoughts towards you in the frozen north.

Georgia is odd. It's been T-shirt weather off and on since October, but when it gets cold it does it fast. We don't have snow, just occasional ice that melts in one day. The last time we had any snow that stuck and was more than two inches deep was the blizzard of '93, and people still talk about that. I fondly remember it as the only time in my life that I've ever gone sledding.

My mom spent part of her childhood in Arkansas. Other than her story of being "tree-ed" by razorback hogs (!!) on her way home from school (when it was after dark and she still hadn't come home yet, her father went to go find her by walking her usual two mile path to school through the woods), one of her oft-repeated stories were the ice storms they periodically got.

The ice storms would knock out what little electric power existed at the time in the area she lived in the 40s. They didn't really get snow much... but when they did, it came as ice storms that completely disabled everything!
