I replied to flownwrong's really long Tumblr post (with lots of lovely gifs) on c6d (CKR) movies/TV with a fic rec... but I put the wrong/dead fic link in there. So I made a separate fic post with the correct (Wayback Machine) link for this incredible Hard Core Logo/eXistenZ(/Highlander) AU crossover fic from almost 20 years ago which is as good now as it was then.
flownwrong (I think? the OP?) mentioned a great HCL fic, Xeriscape (on AO3). And that is a great fic. And I replied with a fave of my own: Perspective's A Bitch (Negative Feed), also on AO3.
But there is another HCL fic I think deserves a post of it's own: Your Guide to a Safe eXistenZ by dayse, which is not on AO3. It was only on LJ, posted for a summer fic exchange (almost 20 years ago, sheesh). Unfortunately, the link in the LJ comm goes to a dead link/domain, that the author dayse had... which no longer exists. But the Wayback link works!!
If you've seen eXistenZ, I can sum up the plot as: "A post-HCL, Jenifur-band-member Billy Tallent plays eXistenZ."
If you haven't seen eXistenZ, well, eXistenZ is about immersive, full-sensory, virtual reality gaming with semi-living game pods that plug into your central nervous system via a port in your spine.
You don't need to have seen eXistenZ to read "Your Guide to a Safe eXistenZ" -- the fic is more accurately described as "post-HCL Billy in an eXistenZ 'verse" rather than an actual crossover. No eXistenZ characters are in the fic. There's a teensy bit of Highlander in there when Billy plays another game with his game-pod, but you also don't really need to know Highlander to understand it. It helps, but it's not necessary.
Your Guide to a Safe eXistenZ is good. Really good. This fic will fuck with you. But in a good way - in a mindfuck-y way.
If you liked either - or both - films, I think you'll love dayse's Your Guide to a Safe eXistenZ
I wish it were on AO3 where I could leave gushy comments. I don't know where dayse is, or if she gafiated or what... I know
ride_4ever tried to get in touch with her and got no response. I'll go back and leave a comment on the LJ comm though. IDK if she'll ever see it, but it is so comment-worthy. 💜
