The other night while I was at work, the unit secretary was playing "Tell Me Something Good" by Rufus (and Chaka Khan) on her cell phone mp3 player. I was sitting nearby writing notes in a patient's chart, the guy from houskeeping was sitting there nearby us, and all three of us were bobbing our heads, singing along with the chorus: Tell me somethin' good... tell me that you like it, yeah..." This song is, what -- over 30 years old? Doesn't matter. When we realized all three of us were doing it, we all just looked at each other and smiled. I'm as white as they come -- which my dark Mexican bf never lets me forget -- and the other two people were black, but I had to say: This song should never be covered by anyone because the original is perfect. To which the secretary said, "Amen." It just has that irresistible funk rhythm and Chaka's smooth, rich voice. Even from a cell phone mp3 player it's awesome -- but better from real speakers and even better through head phones.
Eh, you gotta take the little joys where you find 'em. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P23WCKgZGgo
In other "we knew this already, but thanks for confirming the worst" news, we have:
Which jobs have highest rate of depression? Report says personal care, restaurant industries suffer worst cases of blues
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21292612/
Shocking. Not. Healthcare workers came in 3rd.
Then we have
Sick? Lonely? Genes tell the tale | People who feel isolated have haywire immune systems, researchers say
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20764461/
which has the quote: "there is something about being isolated and lonely that changes your body."
Also,
Depression may do more damage than diseases | Disorder is harder on health than ills such as diabetes, arthritis, experts say
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20631359/
LONDON - Depression is more damaging to everyday health than chronic diseases such as angina, arthritis, asthma and diabetes, researchers said on Friday.
Proof yet again (as if we needed any) that mind and body are not separate, they are an entirety and must be treated that way.
Continuing the "it gets worse before it gets better" theme,
CDC: Suicide rate jumps for kids, young adults | Biggest rise in 15 years; 'black box' antidepressant label blamed by some
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20620477/
But, aha! we have a new take on old themes:
For some couples, distance is key to closeness | Husband and wife find joy living apart — together
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21369007/page/2/
This sounds... frakkin' ideal to me. Except I'm not too sure about the kids part.
And finally, as I've long suspected, happy news about us uppity women:
Feminists (and their men) have more fun | Relationship study contradicts negative stereotypes about strong women
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21364055/
"Feminism boosts sexual satisfaction for both men and women, a new study suggests. Busting stereotypes that peg feminists as man-haters, a new study shows that having a feminist partner is linked with healthier, more romantic heterosexual relationships."
Like, duh. Non-feminist women expect the man to read their mind and do everything for them without telling them what they want, for fear of seeming slutty. Which is ridiculous. But feminist aren't afraid to tell men when, where and how to touch us, or just take charge of the sex ourselves, greatly lessening the potential feelings of inadequacy for men by taking responsibility for our own pleasure in ways zip-lipped non-feminist women can't. So of course men with women like us are happier! They aren't dealing with sexual cripples but with fully functional partners in every sense of the word "partner."
Yay.
