I remembered the name of the book that I read that I found so enlightening about the ancient Greeks' and Romans' views on men having sex with men (and with women, and women having sex with women, etc.) (They didn't view things the same way either; there were significant differences between how Greeks viewed m/m and how the Romans did.)
Anyway, the scholarly book I stumbled on (almost literally) in my local library was called Bisexuality in the Ancient World and the author was Eva Cantarella. Amazon info is here:

I thought it would prove useful if I ever had to write backstory for LaCroix (the former General Lucius, before he was brought over by his daughter Divia) from Forever Knight. Or if I ever decided to write Alexander/Hephaistion fic.
I guess I just don't have what it takes to keep up with all the "cool" slash. There was a Zebracon workshop I had to miss (school, hospital clinical) that I wish I'd been to, and it was how to (paraphrasing) keep your slash fire burning when there's no one left in your fandom or it's not "cool" anymore and many people have moved on. Which is, well, a problem. Especially because I just don't have enough time to watch things like NUMB3RS and I no longer have cable/satellite, so I can't watch Rome on HBO. I don't have enough time to watch TV, period.
I seem to always like the little shows that don't make it. Dead Like Me -- I fucking loved that show. I got the 1st season DVD. It was a little kernel of personal growth and hope surrounded by the dark, cynical POV of an 18-going-on-40 yr old girl who just became a Reaper, within an ironic context where her personal/spiritual growth doesn't really even begin until she's dead. I totally responded to the vibe of that show! Of course, Showtime cancelled it.
Of course, I was into XF and BTVS... and they're over now, too. And I miss them. Sure, I picked up on Veronica Mars -- but by accident. I caught part of an ep, and only AFTER I'd seen an episode, did I go searching the 'net for info on it, only to discover that his Buffyness, Joss Whedon, also loves the show himself. (And he was on last week's episode, too.) And I was so pissed off a few months ago when my local Fox affiliate dropped BTVS and Angel re-runs from their schedule in favor of Alias. Which is a good show, I guess, in it's way... it's just so La Femme Nikita with a much bigger budget for special effects and promotion, imo. Kind of the way I initially resented BTVS for surviving seven long seasons when Forever Knight got cancelled at the end of each of its three. FK was just ahead of its time, I guess... paving the way for things like Buffy and Angel. Sigh.
On the other hand, if I'm not on discussion lists, and not active online in a "cool" fandom, well, there's no possibilities of encountering clique-ishness or feuds or flames, all of which I have seen more times than I can count, and which I've come to regard as an inevitable part of the life cycle of fandoms. I just want to talk about shows and write fic. I don't want to get embroiled in ...things. Just seems like you can't have one without the other. Sigh.
In that respect, being obscure, writing obscure, and flying under the radar have their benefits.

Date: 2005-11-29 10:05 pm (UTC)I know you're celebrating flying under the radar in this post, but honestly, DS is a sweetness and light fandom right now, and I'd encourage you to come a little deeper into the water! Join the various communities--you don't have to post if you don't want to! Friend people! Post fic here!--though I must say, you should cut tag long stories like Tight. It's really hard to read: I'd suggest putting it up on a webpage and then linking from here, or crossposting to
Again, let me know how/if I can help!

Date: 2005-11-30 09:50 am (UTC)I totally agree with you about La Femme Nikita and Alias. And the early seasons especially of Angel were just so FK I couldn't believe it. But I never made any kind of rivalry connection in my head between Buffy and FK. I guess I saved that for my bitter Stargate vs. Farscape thoughts. ::g::
And I would be extremely interested in any LaCroix or Alexander/Hephaestion fics you might write. I also like a lot of little shows that don't make it - so go you for keeping your fandoms alive!
