Re: it's ok, I always talk to much, lol
Date: 2014-12-23 01:45 am (UTC)I think that my mistake was that I watched The Fall and then Top of the Lake. So I sorta expected the second show to feel familiar. FWIW, Jane Campion is a middle of the road director for me. I like some of her stuff while others have left me cold. FTR, I only made it to the second episode before I bowed out and deleted the series from my queue.
Oh, I didn't know Aisha Tyler was in Archer! As a matter of fact, I recently discovered that Jessica Walter voices the older lady in that show. I've always had a soft spot for her circa her Arrested Development days. So, that's two pluses/incentives towards watching that show (sometime in the near-ish future).
The way Jonny plays him, Sherlock seems somewhat Asperger's-ish or maybe on the spectrum, say, high functioning autist or at the very least non-neurotypical, though it's hard to say if A) Sherlock actually lacks social skills/can't read social cues, or B) has mastered them/can read them, and merely dispenses with social niceties as an extension of his known/existing rejection of hoary sentimentality and conventional social mores.
I hadn't thought about the possibility of Sherlock being on the spectrum (does that makes a lot of sense). That said, I believe that B) is the right answer. IIRC, he's commented on more than one occasion that he really doesn't care to follow those "social niceties" you mentioned. I'm almost sure that he did that a lot more in earlier episodes in S1, mostly because Joan would call him out on being a jerk? At that time, though, it was also hinted at that his determination to be honest (usually in a tactless way) was tied to his recovery. He was definitely blunt(er) before he and Joan formalized their partnership (towards the middle part of S1).
In all truth, I don't know what would be worse: to see Kitty being a double-agent/betray Sherlock and Joan OR to see her getting killed by whoever. I'm a tad worried at either outcome since TPTB have positioned her as someone whom the audience will care about one way or another. :|
I'm curious, now: Why was BBC Sherlock a no-go for you?
I think it was a combination of things: hype backlash for one. EVERYONE in Fandom kept squeeing about the show to the point that I expected my mind to blow away when I watched it. Not a spoiler: I didn't.
Also, I was more into the side characters: Mary, Althea, Lestrade, Sally Donovan. And, the part of the Sherlock fandom I came across hated at least two of those characters. They liked Lestrade (though he usually got paired up with Mycroft).
I liked Moriarty--despite the fact that I had a head canon of Mary being actual!Moriarty (to the point of manipulating the Moriarty Sherlock "met").
Finally, I didn't find Sherlock nor John attractive. It's the shallowest of reasons, I KNOW! But then, I can't get into media if the characters leave me cold on all levels. This is why, for example, I love reading some Inception fic (because I think both Eames and Arthur are super yummy).
FTR, I did try to read fic in the Sherlock fandom. However, considering that the majority of the fic was Sherlock/John, that was dead on arrival. So, all that + my general apathy towards the Sherlock Holmes mythos = me sidestepping the entire fandom.
I did hear about the Irene Adler thing (how she was a lesbian dominatrix) and basically rolled my eyes.
ANYHOO, I have watched 1 and 1/2 seasons of Hemlock Groove. It's ridiculous gore but I don't mind it. Hee, it seems that you and I both think Famke is a hottie. LOL.
The Knick I gave 2 tries. Not for me. I'm a moderate Clive Owen fan (there was a point in his career when he did a lot of crappy movies) since his turn in Croupier. But I wasn't too enthused with it. So I don't think I'll get back to it.
Oh, you're welcome on the rec! IMHO, I do believe that the author has done a wonderful job of getting their voices down in a very organic way. Part of what got me into reading it was that it was a post-series fic that went about fixing things without having to retcon anything/everything.
How do you feel about the upcoming S2 of True Detective, by the way? I am a tad ambivalent about the casting of Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrel. Not two actors I'm excited about(even though this is going to be a totally new story and all). I'm not familiar with Taylor Kitsch's roles (have yet to watch Friday Night Lights and I don't really know what else he's been in) so he's kinda a moot point on my thoughts about the upcoming season.
