Autopsy: One-Year-Old Murdered
South Side Child's Death Ruled a Murder
CHICAGO (STNG) ―
The Friday death of a 1-year-old South Side boy has been ruled a murder, according to a Saturday autopsy.
Nashawn Lewis, 19 months, of 836 W. 78th St., was pronounced dead at 5:25 p.m. Friday at Holy Cross Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Nashawn's mother took the boy for a walk in his stroller Friday afternoon when she realized he was unresponsive, according to police News Affairs Officer Gabrielle Lesniak. She then took him into a medical clinic they had been walking past in the 1600 block of West 79th Street, and the clinic's employees called 911.
Fire crews arrived and took the baby to Holy Cross, where he was pronounced, Lesniak said.
A Saturday autopsy determined Nashawn died of multiple injuries from child abuse and the death was ruled a homicide, the medical examiner's office said.
A Department of Children and Family Services spokesman was not immediately available.
Calumet Area detectives are investigating, and no one was in custody as of 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
I don't know about that last line but the police took the parents into custody Friday night from our ER. Deservedly so. The screaming and carrying on by the mother about how she did everything for her baby was a show she put on for the ER staff. Not one actual real tear fell from either of her eyes. I've seen a lot of people die in our ER, or come in DOA. And I've seen a lot of their loved ones come to see them. Transcending ethnic and religious differences is the tendency of people to want to be in the room with their dead loved one.
Not this girl. Nope. She preferred to sit in a chair outside her dead son's room, talking on her cell phone. And that kid was dead for hours before we got him, before she even got him to the clinic, we all agreed. His rectal temp was 89.3 degrees. If the body loses 1.5 degrees per hour after death (a standard), then that kid was dead for 6.2 hours before he came to our ER. Most likely she was pushing that kid around in a stroller dead. For quite a while.
Aside from the fact that he had healing burns all over his legs and butt and old scars all over his head and body.
