verushka70: CKR's hands are just so damn sexy. (hand porn)

Joe/Billy handholding in HCL (widescreen vs. fullscreen)

In the countless times I've watched Hard Core Logo -- I would estimate upwards of 25, but less than 40 -- I completely missed this subtle little bit of handholding when Tiffany interviews Billy, and Joe interrupts.

My other AVI of HCL was not the widescreen version. Now I have the widescreen version in AVI format, and clearly the fullscreen version lopped off an important part of the left side of the frame! Watch what happens to Billy's right hand after he says "I suffer for his art" and jerks his thumb at Joe.

As Joe says "Whatever keeps you honest," he grabs Billy's hand and... caresses his wrist.

I slowed down the hand holding part on purpose so you can see how Joe first grabs Billy's hand, then slides his grasp down Billy's wrist.

This is so deliciously but heartbreakingly affectionate and slashy, I just -- eeeee!

Was this scripted, or ad libbed by HD and CKR? even more eeee!

If you want to dl a short AVI of this scene, go to https://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1629560/handholding.avi. This embedded version is flash video.

Maybe other people were already aware of this, but I wasn't. Glad I noticed it.
*hearts HCL even more than before*
*even hearts Bruce McD for leaving it in*

Mmm, yeah, *that* scene. I actually didn't pick up on the wrist holding til my third viewing of HCL *g*

You know, as a matter of fact, that entire scene is very domestic. Joe brings Billy coffee, the whole 'married white trash couple' quip, the wrist holding...

It's all sweet from Joe's perspective (or, well, as sweet as someone with as many issues as Joe has can be).

Billy's POV, however, can be read in so many ways. He's passive through most of it but he doesn't reject Joe's advances (verbal or otherwise). What makes it kinda weird from Billy's perspective is that he doesn't address Joe directly (if my memory is correct--it's been a couple of months since I last watched HCL) til after the journalist gets told off by Joe. Is it that he is tired? That he doesn't feel like having to explain his relationship dynamics to the world, i.e. the journalist? I don't know.

I still love the scene though because it gives echoes/shades of what life must have been like for Billy and Joe away from the stage.

Sorry if I got a bit rambly. Put Billy and Joe in front of me and I become a motormouth. *g*

Well, that's what I get for primarily watching (and re-watching and re-watching) the fullscreen version! I can't believe I only just noticed that now... duh!!

*nods* Yes, very. Sweetly domestic.

Yes, passive is what I called it. He's very ...neutral. He doesn't reject, but he also doesn't return Joe's advances. Yes, your memory is correct: he doesn't address Joe directly until after Joe tells her to fuck off, when he says, "You're good with people."

He looks like he might be tired... and I doubt he feels the need to explain his relationship dynamics to anyone. But I get the feeling that he's... kind of closed.

Closed not only to the journalist, but to Joe, too. Except for him putting his hand on Joe's chest at the end, after he's already decided to leave and is clearly feeling guilty, does he ever touch Joe affectionately like Joe touches him, kisses him, etc.? I don't think so.

The wrist caress reminds me of how, after the Rock Against Guns concert, Billy is talking to Flash Bastard about being in Jenifur, and Joe comes up and says "He's mine, I'm going to take him now" and grabs Billy by the upper arms and pulls/pushes Billy away from them and towards Festus (presumably to discuss the reunion tour). If you watch Billy in that, he's similarly neutral. He accepts it, doesn't reject it, doesn't throw Joe off... but he's kind of closed, subdued, not interested (or enthused?) enough to walk forward out of Joe's grip. Now, he obviously doesn't dislike it. But that he doesn't return Joe's gestures or touches, either... There's a lot of space there for fic. *g*

I still love the scene though because it gives echoes/shades of what life must have been like for Billy and Joe away from the stage.

*nods* I totally agree.

Sorry if I got a bit rambly. Put Billy and Joe in front of me and I become a motormouth.

Well, clearly I suffer from that affliction, too! *g*

*ponders* Mmm, I think one of the few times where we see him initiating things is during that concert where he's wasted to the point that even Joe is like 'what the fuck, Billy? get your act together'. (He rubs his head against Joe's back.)

On the other hand (and despite the fact that he's outwardly so passive/neutral) throughout most of the movie, no one can deny that Billy and Joe share a bond that few people can even attempt to break through. Even in his general, well, aloofness, he will back Joe up (punching the dude who tries to hit Joe in one of the concerts) no matter what (going ahead with the lie about Bucky Haight even though it's obvious it won't be long before it gets revealed as a hoax). Notice how he doesn't tell Joe off for insulting the reporter.

Perhaps, Joe is all about PDAs while Billy likes to keep it behind closed doors? Adding an extra layer of tension to their dynamic. Maybe this is part of the reason why Joe didn't want to sell out?

That's true. But that's the only one I can think of. Maybe his aloofness breaks down when he's more vulnerable (like, drunk... or kicked out of Jenifur). *pets Billy*

*nodsnodsnods* Very true.

Well, that's certainly the premise in some Joe/Billy fic. But if that's why Joe didn't want to sell out, it would mean Joe was protecting Billy in a way. Kind of romantic. Ah, Joe.
