Your impressions of Ronnie Spector reminds me of my boss' initial mehs when her boyfriend took her to a Lionel Ritchie concert during his last tour. She was pretty much in the DNW/please, take me out of my misery mood up to the day of the concert. Flashforward to the next day when she was heart-eyeing Ritchie's professionalism and showmanship. I think that, to a certain extent, there are many old school musicians who can still put out a great show. Meanwhile, there are some youngsters who make me wonder about their longevity. Like Adele, for example. She's taken kinda poor care of her voice (she's a heavy smoker who has cut down her cigarette count). For someone with lots of charisma and a wonderful talent for singing, I'm not sure if she'll have the same longevity in the business.
Glad to know that you had a great time at both the Ronnie as well as your nephew's concerts. ^_^
I can't quite say that I'm filled with the holiday spirit (though I certainly wish I was). If anything, I'm ready to close the book on 2014 and wave it good-bye.
You know, I was ready to watch Gracepoint (iirc, the first two episodes were free on iTunes for a little bit so I downloaded them). But then, I'd heard that it was a remake of a British show and so I bookmarked that show on iTunes for the winter hiatus. Turns out that, if I'm not mistaken, Broadchurch (the original show) will be streaming in Netflix sometime this month. So I'll probably watch it first and then compare it to Gracepoint. I've purposely kept myself away from most spoilers (though I have a general idea about what the main plot is). That said, I did hear that TPTB purposely changed the identity of the criminal in Gracepoint. I'll probably won't get around to watching it til January the earliest.
I've totally lost track with TVD. Like you, I though that S5 was mostly a mess of gigantic proportions (I stopped watching halway through the season and never really came back). There was something I read a few days ago about how some of the cast is super bored with the show but are locked into a contract. It must really suck for them, then, that TVD remains somewhat popular (for better or worse, it cemented the CW as a valid network). I might tune in for S6 sometime in the nearish future? (But I'm in no hurry to do so).
Huh, I don't know why I've never watched Archer (though I've heard about it both in mainstream media as well as in online (fannish) places). Do you know if it's streaming on Netflix?
S2 of Elementary was beyond disappointing. I hated the Mycroft/Joan romance and how TPTB basically shoved Mycroft into the show, therefore displacing even Sherlock himself. I did liked the dynamic between Mycroft and Sherlock--to the point that I wish that Mycroft hadn't turned out to be MI6 because that made things so convenient, you know? I remember feeling like watching S2 was a chore akin to ironing or something else I really, really don't like doing.
So, in all truth, my expectations for S3 were kinda low. I wasn't too keen on the idea of Joan reuniting with her ex-fiance (since that's what was promoted right before the show returned). Like, I know she wants her own life, but I find a lot of the romance plots on TV shows tedious as hell.
All in all, I found myself liking Kitty. I'm kinda eye-rolling her back story (the idea that she was so broken and her past victimization), but I do enjoy her friendship with Joan and how she's brought a new facet in Sherlock's personality. For all his brilliance, he doesn't have all the answers on how to help Kitty mend herself. I also like that TPTB aren't making theirs a romantic relationship.
It also feels a tad like S1 of Elementary in the way that most of the cast is actively participating in the episodes. Is it a bit predictable? Sure, it is. I don't mind it since I'm not specifically watching it for the mystery themselves as much as I'm watching it for the characters.
I do wish Ms. Hudson as well as Alfredo showed up in a couple of episodes this season.
My main complaint about Sherlock is that, in an effort to show how much he's grown after his partnership with Joan, TPTB have also sorta scrubbed him clean a little? I'm not talking about his clothes (though I do miss the hipster clothing of the early eps in S1), but more about how he'd view sex and would be shown having an active sex life?
Mind you, I only ship Sherlock/Marcus so I might as well be dreaming because I don't think there are many chances of that happening in canon. :(
Oh, I love HTGAWM. LOVE IT! It's ridiculously OTT yet Viola Davis is mesmerizing. I am I(not surprisingly) Team Connor and, to a lesser extent, Team Bonnie. About the one character I really don't give two hoots about is Laurel (or, like I like to call her, Wallpaper Girl). TBH, it might be more due to casting (the actress isn't that good and is kinda generically pretty?) than the actual character.
I like it so much that I'm able to handwave all the highly illegal!law maneuvers Viola and co. do week in and week out.
FWIW, I tend to think that fic will usually triumph over most canons. \Fics/!
Oh, I didn't know you watched Penny Dreadful too! :DDDD!
