Oh, this hurts so good! So painful, and so in keeping with the movie. Jerry is always trying to forge a connection through some kind of exchange. And he's always rejected: people saying "I won't owe you a favor. I won't have even the simplest social contract with you." And this thing with Joe seems to be an exchange ... but it's not, because it's not Jerry that Joe is with.
